Regulating Star Formation in Nearby Dusty Galaxies: Low Photoelectric Efficiencies in the Most Compact Systems

چکیده

Star formation in galaxies is regulated by the heating and cooling interstellar medium. In particular, processing of molecular gas into stars will depend strongly on ratio to neutral around sites recent star-formation. this work, we combine mid-infrared (mid-IR) observations Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), dominant mechanism medium (ISM), with [C II], [O I], [Si II] fine-structure emission, strongest channels dense, gas. The IR line emission PAH measures photoelectric efficiency, a property ISM which dictates how much energy carried ultraviolet photons gets transferred We find that star-forming, luminous Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) high surface densities have low efficiencies. These systems also have, average, higher ratios radiation field strength densities, larger average dust grain size distributions. data support scenario most compact more young star-forming regions per unit area, exhibit less efficient heating. conditions may be common at high-z, help explain star-formation rates cosmic noon. make predictions can investigated JWST.

The Star Formation Relation in Nearby Galaxies

I review observational studies of the large-scale star formation process in nearby galaxies. A wealth of new multi-wavelength data provide an unprecedented view on the interplay of the interstellar medium and (young) stellar populations on a few hundred parsec scale in 100+ galaxies of all types. These observations enable us to relate detailed studies of star formation in the Milky Way to the z...

The history of star formation in dusty galaxies

A population of distant dusty galaxies emitting in the submillimetre waveband has recently been detected using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). This population can be used to trace the amount of high-redshift star-formation activity that is obscured from view in the optical waveband by dust, and so is missing from existing...

Star Formation Histories of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

Properties of nearby dwarf galaxies are briefly discussed. Dwarf galaxies vary widely in their star formation histories, the ages of their subpopulations, and in their enrichment history. Furthermore, many dwarf galaxies show evidence for spatial variations in their star formation history; often in the form of very extended old populations and radial gradients in age and metallicity. Determinin...

Star Formation in the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies

We review progress over the past decade in observations of large-scale star formation, with a focus on the interface between extragalactic and Galactic studies. Methods of measuring gas contents and star formation rates are discussed, and updated prescriptions for calculating star formation rates are provided. We review relations between star formation and gas on scales ranging from entire gala...

Star Formation in Three Nearby Galaxy Systems

We present an analysis of the distribution and strength of star formation in three nearby small galaxy systems, which are undergoing a weak interaction, a strong interaction, and a merging process, respectively. The galaxies in all systems present widespread star formation enhancements, as well as, in some cases, nuclear activity. In particular, for the two closest systems, we study the numberc...
